Smoking and Wrinkles – How to Prevent Smoking Effects on Skin

Picture
Don't look at me Jerry....I'm Hideous!
I am a huge Seinfeld fan. One of my favorite episodes is where Kramer, after becoming frustrated by not being allowed to smoke in any public places, turns his apartment into a smoking lounge. After only a few days of being exposed to huge amounts of smoke he looks horrible, like he has been smoking for 50 years. His face is ashen and wrinkled, his teeth are yellow, and he looks, in a word, hideous.

Whether you are a Seinfeld fan or not, there is actually a grain of truth to this funny episode and a lesson to be learned from it. Smoking and wrinkles do go hand in hand. If you continue to smoke your skin may end up looking (as Jerry tells Kramer), like an "old catcher's mitt."

The effects of smoking on skin are very negative leading to wrinkles and a general ashen appearance. I mean, take a look at anyone you know who has smoked for a period of time and the proof is in the pudding. They generally look unhealthy, wrinkled, and old "before their time."  Smoking speeds up the aging process by creating "smoking wrinkles." The effects of smoking on the skin can hurt your physical appearance along with your health.

Why does this happen? Why does smoke that is drawn into the lungs affect you on the outside as well as the inside? Actually it all does start on the inside. The nicotine in cigarettes constricts the blood vessels. This constriction carries through all the way to the very smallest capillaries that feed the oxygen and nutrients in the blood to your skin. The reduced flow of blood to the skin reduces the amount of oxygen supplies to the skin leading to smoking wrinkles.

Ok, so what are your options to stop or reverse the effects of smoking on the skin? Well you could choose from a couple of options:

Cover it up-You can look for wrinkle cream or make-up to cover up the damage. This may work for a short time, but eventually the damage will get bad enough that you will not be able to cover it up.

Or…

Quit Smoking Cigarettes-This is really the only viable option to really halt smoking effects on skin and put a stop to smoking wrinkles. When you quit smoking you go to the root of the problem instead of just covering it up. An added bonus? You may end up saving your life along the way. By saving your looks you can save your life.

The good news is that it is easier to quit smoking now than it has ever been before. So you can save your skin and save your life at the same time.
